A competitive search is appropriate when a vacancy exists and is advertised to the general population. Qualified applications are invited to apply for a position through a competitive process. It may be internal (for OSU regular employees only), or external (for all interested applicants).

Generally, a competitive search for an unclassified position should remain open for a minimum of 30 calendar days. In rare circumstances, and only with approval from the business center HR manager, a competitive search can be “accelerated.” An accelerated search is one that occurs for 13 days or less.

A non-competitive search is one that does not solicit applicants to compete for the vacant position. This is also referred to as a waiver to a regular competitive search process.
