General Description of Class
The CARTOGRAPHIC ASSISTANT traces, revises, and makes corrections to existing maps. Work is accomplished by computer, mechanical, and manual methods.
Distinguishing Features
This is beginning level work in cartography. It is distinguished from the higher levels by the fact that the Cartographic Assistant does no original cartography but works from existing maps.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Mapping. Typical tasks: traces, revises, and makes corrections to existing maps as designated by a superior; traces and revises property boundaries, streets, subdivisions, and calculations, using mechanical lettering instruments, electric eraser, and other drafting tools; may also trace, ink, and letter industrial site plans, drawings, charts, and graphics.
- Reproducing. Typical tasks: reproduces maps, plans, deeds, and similar items using a diazo white printer, Xerox engineering print equipment, varitype equipment, and microfilm and microfiche printers.
- Recordkeeping. Typical tasks: sorts, files, and retrieves deeds, surveys, maps, records, and similar items from files and microfilm/microfiche; maintains records, and fills orders for maps requested by state and county agencies and the public by pulling the requested map, reproducing a copy and sending it to the mailroom for mailing.
Relationships with Others
Employees in this class are in contact weekly by telephone or in-person with agency staff who have questions regarding work being performed on maps, plans, drawings, charts, and graphs. Employees have occasional contact by telephone with state and county agencies and the public who order/purchase maps.
Supervision Received
Employees in this class receive close supervision, usually by a lead cartographer, project manager or administrative superior. The Cartographic Assistant is instructed as to colors and lettering to use and what to write
and where. Work is reviewed on an ongoing basis for accuracy and progress. Completed assignments are reviewed for accuracy, neatness, and compliance with established mapping standards.
General Information
Positions require the willingness to stand for long periods throughout the day while filing or operating printing and reproducing equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- one year postsecondary training in drafting or cartography; OR
- one year on-the-job training in drafting or cartography; OR
- an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Employees entering this classification must have a basic knowledge of drafting techniques; drafting instruments and tools; the ability to understand and follow oral and written instruments; the ability to be on one's feet for prolonged periods; and the ability to adapt to frequent work interruptions and changes in priorities.
