General Description of Class
The Education Program Assistant is comprised of two classifications that support an educational program through the delivery, coordination, promotion, and evaluation of program elements. Examples of programs included in the allocation of these classifications are the 4-H Youth Development Program, Nutrition, and Master Gardener.
Distinguishing Features
This is the second level of a two level series. The characteristics and duties of each level are generally additive to higher-level classifications. Level 2 may perform some or all of the duties of lower- level classifications.
At this level, the Education Program Assistant 2 supports an educational program through the delivery of program curricula, coordination of program elements or projects and assisting with the assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of the program. This level is distinguished from the lower level by the responsibility for developing programs and collaborative community partnerships independently, initiating program changes, and providing lead work to lower-level staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties listed below are not inclusive but characteristic of the type and level of work associated with this class. Individual positions may perform all or some combination of the duties listed below as well as other related duties.
- Educational Delivery. Typical tasks: Collaborate with faculty to determine overall program goals and objectives. Work independently to develop and deliver educational programs. Develop written materials and activities to supplement curriculum. Conduct educational presentations at fairs and community events. Provide classroom management practices as necessary.
- Program Assistance and Coordination. Typical tasks: Coordinate and assist with training of new staff, volunteers or interns. Assign, plan and review work of lower level staff as directed by supervisor. Coordinate the recruitment and selection of speakers, volunteers, and judges. Schedule staff to provide coverage at educational programs and events. Coordinate educational program with principals, teachers and community partners.
- Outreach and Engagement. Collaborate with faculty member to identify and engage local partners and stakeholders in community assessment, program design, implementation and evaluation of programs. Promote and market the educational program using mixed-media in conjunction with a faculty member i.e.writingnews releases, articles, and public service announcements; giving public presentations in person, radio, or television; and designing and/or maintaining website. Develops and maintains educational content for displays and exhibits.
- Records and Reports. Compile and summarize evaluation data and program statistics. Share program evaluation data with stakeholders and decision makers.
PROBLEM-SOLVING AND DECISION-MAKING
The Education Program Assistant 2 makes decisions around disputes regarding policies, procedures and either resolves conflict as required or determines when to refer the dispute to the supervisor. In conjunction with a faculty member, Education Program Assistants determine how to manage and to prioritize resources, where to conduct engagement activities, and where to offer educational programs.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Employees in this class often work in the community and receive supervision from a faculty member who reviews their work through informal personal contact and/or weekly or monthly meetings and conferences. Work is reviewed to assess progress and conformance to program goals and objectives. Work is also reviewed through written narrative reports and observation of written program documents to determine effectiveness and conformance to project/program guidance, policies and procedures. Employees in this class use university and department/unit policies and procedures, applicable State and Federal program policies and departmental procedures as guidelines in the completion of their work.
Relationships with Others
Employees in this class have regular contact with the public, in person and by telephone or email, to promote awareness of interest in a program and to engage the public as volunteers, participants, or partners. There is regular contact in person and by telephone or email with participants and potential participants to answer questions concerning programs. Education Program Assistant 2 explains and interprets policies to new employees, student workers, and volunteers to train and orient them to the program. They work to build collaborative partnerships with other agencies and organizations in the community. They also explain the program and program policies to community partners. Employees in this class have occasional contact in person and by telephone and email with members of the media to promote awareness of a program or event.
General Information
Employees in this class often work in the field, at client locations or in diverse settings associated with the position's location and purpose. Positions are found on university campuses and in multiple locations throughout the state. Employees have access to a personal vehicle, and routinely check in and maintain contact with their base office. The position requires the willingness to work within multiple environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults OR
- Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions OR
- Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent.
AND
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.
