General Description of Class
The ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN 2 is responsible for installation, service and repair of complex electronic industrial, scientific measurement, and control devices.
Distinguishing Features
The Electronic Technician 2 is the second level of a two-level series of classes. It is distinguished from the lower level by the responsibility for working on the most complex control instruments and specialized equipment such as scientific testing and research devices. This employee independently installs and performs preventative maintenance on devices, in contrast to the lower level technician, who acts as an assistant in the repair of such devices and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, Testing, and Purchasing Electronic Devices. Typical tasks: design and fabricate test facilities; confer with associates, manufacturer's representative/, salespersons, suppliers, and supervisor in the purchasing of equipment, parts, and supplies; assist in preparing the specifications for such equipment; draft cabinet wiring, storage area, and schematic designs; test and assist with the evaluation of new equipment.
- Installation, Service, Repair and Maintenance. Typical tasks: test, analyze, and isolate defective components for replacement and repair as needed; install new equipment as needed; service, repair, and maintain equipment used in statewide programs; use standard and special tools and test equipment such as: volt-ohmmeters, oscilloscope, digital multimeter, transistor tester, inductance meter, and tube tester to test, analyze, and isolate defective components.
- Shop Coordination. Typical tasks: maintain adequate inventory of materials and supplies needed for servicing and repairing equipment in a timely manner; advise field personnel by telephone regarding the repairing/replacement of their local equipment; examine, test, and evaluate parts, supplies, and materials for management, making short oral or written reports when needed; plan, assign, review, and train new and lower level employees in all aspects of electronic repairs as related to the assigned shop. Maintain all test equipment in good, safe operating condition.
- Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: design and modify cabinets to accommodate equipment; maintain an accurate, current file system on equipment including services records and location of equipment; ship and receive equipment materials supplies to and from field personnel as needed.
Relationships with Others
The Electronic Technician 2 has frequent telephone and in-person contact with vendors and salespersons to ship and receive materials, to test and consider new products and to resolve product problems. This employee also has considerable contact with the field organization to schedule and plan repairs.
Supervision Received
The work of the Electronic Technician 2 is reviewed on a project basis for end results. The overall shop coordination
is reviewed on a weekly basis or as needed. This employee works with considerable independence as the journey level technician. Since this level must exercise judgment and expertise over lower level technicians, most work is reviewed only if a problem arises which could not reasonably be resolved by him/herself.
General Information
Employees in this class work in an electronic shop. Employees must be willing to travel to the job site to perform repairs and maintenance. They must also be willing to work in all types of weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- three years of experience repairing and servicing electronic equipment and instruments; AND
- an Associate's degree in an electronic technology option such as Computer Electronics, Electronic Engineering, or Industrial Electronics; or
- completed an apprenticeship in one of the above technology areas.
