General Description of Class
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 2 applies high levels of knowledge and experience in environmental and occupational health/safety to work independently within multiple areas of assignment.
Distinguishing Features
This is the second level of a three level series. This class is distinguished from the lower level by using additional knowledge and experience to work proficiently and independently within multiple areas of assignment. This class is distinguished from the higher level by the absence of advanced skills and problem solving impacting a broad range of services and he absence of leadership skills to coordinate large scale projects.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED (Definition: Technical knowledge encompasses skills and abilities within a specialty area(s) required to protect the health and safety of employees, students, visitors, and the environment.)
Employees at Level 2 use a broad knowledge of chemistry, chemical hazards storage, and fire/emergency response procedures. They understand federal state and local chemical/environmental legislation, regulations, guidelines, standards and health principles.
COMMUNICATION & SERVICE REQUIREMENTS (Definition: Communication & service encompasses those skills and abilities required to effectively exchange information in order to determine the needs of the university community, respond to their needs, and gain compliance.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 2 assists in writing policies, procedures, bulletins and other material for safety programs. Develops and delivers environmental health and safety educational programs across a variety of departments, work environments, and staff education levels. Responds to inquiries from regulatory agencies, management and employees. Employees in this classification collaborate with managers and staff to address issues through program development and intervention.
PROBLEM SOLVING & PREVENTION (Definition: Problem solving & prevention encompasses those skills and abilities required to analyze issues within a specialty area(s), evaluate options and determine the appropriate solutions that provide a safe environment.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 2 identifies problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws valid conclusions. They communicate information in a clear and concise manner and use judgment and sound technical knowledge to develop and recommend solutions.
WORK COORDINATION (Definition: Work coordination encompasses those skills and abilities required to organize and prioritize work, respond to conflicting business needs, and work collaboratively with a group of people to produce a product or service.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 2 performs liaison and staff work for university committees and departments. Collaborates with external agencies for emergency response, training on complex safety issues, and technical assistance.
ACCOUNTABILITY (Definition: Accountability encompasses those skills and abilities required to make decisions and take responsibility for work.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 2 prepares written reports and recommends procedures to meet compliance requirements. They respond to emergency situations and make necessary decisions to protect the health and welfare of the environment and university community. Employees in this classification prepare written reports to meet compliance requirements, manage various programs within areas of expertise.

LEVELS OF AUTHORITY
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 2 exercises independent judgment to identify, select and apply the most appropriate guidelines and procedures for a variety of circumstances. Determines when basic safety, health, and environmental hazards pose a threat and responds, including shutting down work or directing other employees. May commit appropriate level of resources to resolve emergencies and limit damage. Signs and approves documents such as hazardous wastes manifests, shipping documents, final reports, and National Institute of Health reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- A Bachelor's degree with primary focus (45 quarter hours or 32 semester hours) in the physical sciences; AND
- Two years of related professional experience in environmental, health, or safety; OR
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or professional certifications.
Graduate level courses in the subject areas may be substituted, on a credit-hour basis, for a portion of the required experience.
Preference may be given to applicants who have completed graduate-level courses or have additional experience in Industrial Hygiene, or in occupational, public, or environmental programs.
