Once I start employment, when will my retirement contributions become effective?

Employees that have worked for other Oregon PERS employers may have retirement contributions begin upon hire depending on their status with PERS and/or the OUS Optional Retirement Plan (ORP).  For employees new to Oregon PERS and/or the OUS Optional Retirement Program (ORP), contributions begin:

Classified employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) - OPSRP/IAP Program after completing six consecutive months of service in a qualifying position. A Classified employee in a qualifying position will be automatically enrolled in the PERS OPSRP/IAP when they are eligible.

Unclassified employees will elect which retirement program they will participate in after completing six consecutive months in a qualifying position.  Retirement programs include the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) - OPSRP/IAP Program or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). You will receive an email from Employee Benefits when it is time to make your retirement election.
