Core Curriculum for Managers & Supervisors

About the Program

Managers and supervisors at OSU play a key role in enabling employees to do their best work. The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all Oregon State University managers, supervisors, and lead workers. The objective of this program is for learners to understand the responsibilities they have in their role as as supervisor, and to be able to empower employees in every stage of employment.

Intended Audience

This course has been designed to meet the needs of OSU managers and supervisors with:

  • varied managerial responsibilities (classified staff, professional staff, academic staff, volunteers, and/or student employees); and
  • varied managerial experience (prior supervisory experience within OSU or another organization; those who are new to management; and those who have worked in multiple supervisory roles across the institution).

Role Learners are Preparing For

At the end of this course, learners will:

  • have a solid understanding about the principles and policies that apply to our employees;
  • know how to navigate within the space of talent management activities;
  • recognize when, and how, to provide equal opportunity & access to employees; and
  • be familiar with the OSU resources and responsibilities relating to employee health, safety, and wellbeing.

Registration

This program is offered Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer terms. It includes about 3 hours of online pre-work in Canvas followed by 4 half-days of classroom training.

 

Course Information

About the Pre-Work

The instructor-led training builds on the pre-work in an applied manner. Learners can expect the pre-work to take about three hours to complete. Completing the pre-work will help prepare you for the following:

  • to ask questions about the material where you need clarification or further explanation; and
  • to participate in small group work to bring what you are learning to a practical level.

About the Live Sessions

Subject-matter experts from across campus will present material relevant to OSU supervisors and managers.

The objective of the first day is context-setting, and answering the question, "Where am I?" Session 1 introduces the principles and policies that apply to our employees

4. Employee Health, Safety and Wellbeing

Session 4 supports the learner's understanding of OSU resources and responsibilities relating to employee health, safety, and wellbeing. The objective is for learners to understand the responsibilities they have in their role as a supervisor and be able to connect employees with resources

Session 4 wraps up with a 'call to action,' as learners reflect on how they can transfer the workshop's material into their jobs
