Human Resources Manual
Definition
Promotion to a fixed-term Senior I or Associate Professor rank carries at least a 2-year fixed-term appointment, with the most common practice of extending a 2-year fixed-term appointment. Promotion to a fixed-term Senior II or Professor rank carries at least a 2-year fixed-term appointment, which may in some circumstances be extended to a 3-year appointment. Academic faculty on a multi-year fixed-term appointment receive a renewal notice of appointment no later than one month prior to the end of the final year of their multi-year appointment. These appointments have a distinct start and end date and may be renewed at the conclusion of the contract period.

Funding Requirement
An expectation of funding continuation for a position is a reasonable consideration in determining a contract duration beyond the required two years. Any appointment consideration over three years requires consultation with the Office of Faculty Affairs.
Annual Review
The unit head continues to be responsible for monitoring, recording, and holding employees accountable for performance during a multi-year appointment.
For academic faculty up for renewal, Human Resources will confirm renewal intent with the unit head. A decision to non-renew an appointment is subject to the non-renewal procedures.
