General Description of Class
The ELECTRICIAN performs skilled journey-level electrical work to install, alter, maintain, and repair electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in State facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Electrical Installation, Maintenance, and Repair. Typical tasks: using work orders and wiring diagrams, installs, alters, maintains, and repairs wiring systems, fire alarm systems, public address systems, electric bridge and ferry controls, signal timers, switchboards, traffic signals, lights, clocks, telephones, floodlights, ornamental lights, and other electrical fixtures and equipment; installs and makes electrical repairs on specialized equipment such as X-ray machines, suction pumps, electrical sterilizers, and therapeutic lamps; installs and maintains motors and generators; rewinds and replaces coils; does related electrical work and some mechanical work to repair or replace parts.
- Administrative Duties. Typical tasks: orders supplies; maintains stock of readily available materials for electrical work; reviews job orders and reads wiring diagrams; cleans work area after completion of job.
Relationships with Others
Employees in this class are in contact several times a week, in person or by telephone, with employees in other State agencies to locate and solve electrical problems. These employees also contact outside vendors on a weekly basis, in person or by telephone, to order equipment, parts and materials.
Supervision Received
Employees in this class receive work assignments and general supervision from a technical supervisor, e.g., a higher level electrician. Assignments are made either orally or through written job orders, which may include sketches or blue prints. They work independently, with work reviewed on a spot-check basis, daily and upon completion, for quality and compliance with safety standards. The employee's work is also subject to inspection by State electrical inspectors to ensure that work is done in accordance with codes, safety, and fire regulations. Employees in this class must comply with relevant safety requirements in national, State, and local electrical fire and building codes. For use of equipment, the electrician follows manufacturer's specifications and manuals.
General Information
Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.
They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to walk, stand and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. They require the willingness to work from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odor and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to lift heavy equipment such as generators.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of one of the following Oregon Electrician's Licenses appropriate to the work to be performed:
- General Supervising Electrician License
- General Journeyman Electrician License
- Limited Journey Manufacturing Plant License
- Limited Supervising Manufacturing Plant License
