General Description of Class
The ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN I assists other technicians in the installation, servicing, and repairing of electronic industrial, scientific measurement, and control devices.
Distinguishing Features
The Electronic Technician 1 is the first level of a two-level series of classes. It is distinguished from the higher level by assisting a higher level technician or supervisor in the installation, servicing and repairing of electronic devices, and by the lesser complexity of the equipment worked on. It is distinguished from electricians by the extensive use of electronic testing devices such as oscilloscopes, voltmeters, analyzing and performance of devices or motors regulated by a combination of electron tubes, capacitors, resistors, transformers, and relays.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Test Equipment Operation. Typical tasks: operates standard and special test equipment including oscilloscopes, vacuum tube testers and voltmeters in the performance of testing, analyzing and repairing of industrial, scientific and research electronic equipment while under direction of a higher level technician or supervisor; reads and analyzes electronic equipment schematics, specifications, engineering drawings, catalogues and manuals to isolate defective components for repair or replacement as needed.
- Electronic Service, Repair, and Maintenance. Typical tasks: assists in the installation, servicing, and repairing of industrial, scientific and research electronic equipment, including radio and TV receivers and traffic counting equipment, using standard and special tools of the trade; assists in adapting new or existing equipment to a variety of uses; carries out a preventative maintenance program by periodically inspecting and servicing equipment to detect and repair defective equipment before breakdowns occur.
- Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: assists in modifying cabinets to accommodate existing or new equipment; maintains a safe and clean work area; ships and receives equipment, materials, and supplies to maintain an adequate inventory for use in service, repair, and maintenance; assists in design and fabrication of instruments, equipment, and test facilities; assists in maintaining accurate, current files on equipment including service records and location of equipment.
Relationships with Others
The Electronic Technician 1 has occasional telephone and in-person contact with vendors and salespersons to ship and receive materials, and to seek out information on trouble shooting new equipment.
Supervision Received
The work of the Electronic Technician 1 is reviewed by a first level supervisor. However, day to day work is generally assigned by a higher level technician. The Electronic Technician 1 receives training, directions,guidance, and assistance in performing the duties of the class from a higher level technician.
General Information
Employees in this class work in an electronic shop. Employees must be willing to travel to the job site to perform repairs and maintenance. They must also be willing to work in all types of weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of experience repairing and servicing electronic equipment and instruments; or
- An Associate's degree in an electronic technology option such as Computer Electronics, Electronic Engineering, or Industrial Electronics; or
- Completion of an apprenticeship in one of the above technology areas.
