General Description of Class
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 1 applies general knowledge of environmental and occupational health/safety to monitor the workplace environment and investigate health concerns and/or accidents.
Distinguishing Features
This is the first of a three level series and is distinguished from the higher levels by emphasis on basic activities under general supervision. Employees in this classification perform entry-level evaluation and analysis in the identification of environmental hazards, solving environmental problems and assessing health risks.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED (Definition: Technical knowledge encompasses skills and abilities within a specialty area(s) required to protect the health and safety of employees, students, visitors, and the environment.)
Employees at Level 1 use a basic knowledge of chemistry, chemical hazards storage, monitoring equipment, and fire/emergency response procedures to investigate incidents, monitor a variety of situations, maintain records and generate reports.
COMMUNICATION & SERVICE REQUIREMENTS (Definition: Communication & service encompasses those skills and abilities required to effectively exchange information in order to determine the needs of the university community, respond to their needs, and gain compliance.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 1 must communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to effectively discuss and resolve technical issues with non-technical people. Provides training on basic environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures.
PROBLEM SOLVING & PREVENTION (Definition: Problem solving & prevention encompasses those skills and abilities required to analyze issues within a specialty area(s), evaluate options and determine the appropriate solutions that provide a safe environment.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 1 consults with university staff on appropriate safety procedures, assess data and report deficiencies, and recommend basic corrective or preventive measures for environmental, health and safety issues.
WORK COORDINATION (Definition: Work coordination encompasses those skills and abilities required to organize and prioritize work, respond to conflicting business needs, and work collaboratively with a group of people to produce a product or service.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 1 provides staff support to safety, health, and environmental projects.
ACCOUNTABILITY (Definition: Accountability encompasses those skills and abilities required to make decisions and take responsibility for work.)
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 1 follows established protocols and policies in carrying out assignments. They maintain records related to specific functions in an established format, accurately and in a timely manner. In addition, they must remain current on technical standards, processes, trends, equipment, and literature.
LEVELS OF AUTHORITY
The Environmental Health & Safety Professional 1 may make decisions to comply with basic university policies and regulations but specific authority is limited to program areas and level of expertise.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- A Bachelor's degree with primary focus (45 quarter hours or 32 semester hours) in the physical sciences; OR
- An Associate's degree in the science field and two years of related experience; OR
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or professional certifications.
Preference may be given to applicants who have completed graduate-level courses or have additional experience in Industrial Hygiene, or in occupational, public, or environmental programs.
