General Description of Class
The EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2 performs skilled work involving the operation and maintenance of large and high powered equipment such as trucks or machinery used in construction and maintenance.
Distinguishing Features
This is the second level of a two-level series. It is distinguished from the lower level by the use of equipment that is predominantly of greater weight and horsepower, and by the greater diversity of equipment operated.
Duties and Responsibilities
Allocation of positions to this class will depend on the total work performed which may include one or a combination of the duties or tasks listed below.
- Equipment Operation. Typical tasks: operates trucks such as tractor trailers, tractor and lowboy (for
transporting heavy equipment and machinery), snowplows, bridge inspection cranes, fish liberation trucks, and dump trucks used in construction and maintenance work, or large-scale merchandise or product delivery or game distribution; operates forklift to load and unload trucks and move material around work place; operates heavy excavation equipment such as dozers, graders, front-end loaders and backhoes used to pile forest slash, build or repair roads, dig trenches for utilities, correct grade for foundation work, clear fire trails, load gravel or debris on trucks; ensures truck is properly loaded; may assign and check the work of lower level equipment operators, laborers, inmates, students, and seasonal workers depending on work assignment. - Equipment Maintenance. Typical tasks: performs preventive detailed maintenance on equipment operated,
including repairing or replacing plugs, wires, distributor caps, points, bearings, clutches, transmissions, starters, alternators, radiators, U-joints, tires, brakes, electrical shorts, and exhaust systems. (Employees in this class may use an arc or gas welder to repair or build parts, and may also correct body damage and paint equipment.) - Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: keeps records of work accomplished on diaries, time sheets and job sheets;
orders parts and materials for servicing equipment; assists in fire fighting and slash-burning by operating tankers and pumpers to put out fires; performs general building and grounds maintenance on facilities and surroundings as required; may perform warehouse duties such as storing stock in proper location.
Relationships with Others
Employees in this class are in regular, in-person contact with various levels of agency staff and agency clients
to receive instructions and coordinate activities on construction and maintenance projects and delivery/distribution
assignments. They have occasional in-person contact with Federal and local agency staff, during cooperative efforts
to contain forest fires to determine the most effective use of resources. They have occasional in-person contact
with parts suppliers and equipment representatives, as needed, to obtain parts to repair equipment.
Supervision Received
Employees in this class receive general supervision from a first line supervisor, who reviews work through inspection of projects several times a week, to ensure that they are completed in an acceptable and timely manner.
Guidelines which must be followed by employees in this class include State and Federal laws concerning safety
and traffic, agency rules governing equipment operation procedures, and technical manuals for equipment repair.
General Information
Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location and purpose.
They require the willingness to perform strenuous physical labor. They require the willingness to work in an
environment associated with construction projects which includes dust, grime, exhaust and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to work with and
around chemicals contained in solvents and lubricants used in equipment maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of experience operating construction and maintenance machinery which includes one or more of the following: tractor with trailer; tractor with low-boy, snowplow; bridge inspection cranes; trucks used in game distribution; heavy excavation equipment such as dozers, graders, front-end loaders, or backhoe; AND
- The ability to secure an Oregon driver's license valid for the classes of vehicles used by the employing agency before date of employment.
