Profile Summary
Positions in this job profile coordinate and communicate media relations for the university research and academic programs with external news media. They develop and maintain a broad spectrum of state and national news media contacts, identify and produce articles, news releases, and other multimedia communications.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Specialist 2-Univ News & Comm is the specialized education and training required to communicate OSU research and academic program news to multiple audiences. Positions coordinate media relations and create news stories and other media formats to convey experiences and accomplishments of faculty and students.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Coordinates media relations with external news media for departments and colleges across the university, developing and maintaining a broad spectrum of state, regional, national and international news media contacts. 2. Identifies stories and produces news and communications, including news releases, tip sheets, media advisories, and other multimedia material. 3. Writes and edits content for university publications and periodicals. 4. Initiates and manages social media and other Web-based tools to promote online content, and amplify news coverage to key audiences. 5. Researches and evaluates new communication technologies and techniques to inform leadership of new opportunities and technology. 6. Develops and engages in collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote and support the university.

Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or related field. Professional experience in public relations and journalism or news writing.
