Positions in this job profile are responsible for the design, development, fabrication, purchase, and maintenance of electronic and mechanical equipment, hardware, materials, and systems for experimental research in a lab, institute, department, or program.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristics of the Specialist 2-Engineer are the responsibilities to manage the design, construction, testing, and documentation for engineering systems within a program or project. Positions provide engineering expertise and require education and experience specific to the field of engineering.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Interprets designs and develops technical and functional system requirements including specifications and detailed designs that verifiably meet performance and interface requirements. 2. Create and analyze electrical designs schematics and specifications, including computer aided design (CAD), resulting in technical design packages for formal design review. 3. Specifies and recommends equipment, systems, components and materials, with written technical documentation. 4. Plans, conducts, and documents tests for assemblies and subassemblies to verify that scientific, performance, and integration requirements are met. 5. Designs operational improvements based on test results, including long-term performance thresholds with verifiable testing and tracking methods. 6. Tracks and maintains records, systems, procedures and manuals for the operations of systems as-built and test records for configuration items.

Problems are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring; require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed. Decisions have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department; the job may contribute to important strategy, operations, and business decisions that affect the department. Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. 5 years of experience in engineering field.
