Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristics of the Specialist 2-Reactor Engineer are the responsibilities to perform calculations in support of new and existing uses of the Oregon State Triga Reactor (OSTR) at the university in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations. Positions make decisions affecting the computational analysis in support of the safe operation and licensing of the OSTR. Decisions include determining the appropriateness and adequacy of methods used to support safety related modifications.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Performs reactor and safety related calculations in support of reactor changes and experiments including running computational codes relevant to both neutronics and thermal hydraulics, assessing results/impacts and making recommendations to leadership for decision making. 2. Ensures compliance university policy, state and federal regulations and industry standards including reactor licensing requirements. 3. Integrates decisions to advance the research, scientific capabilities, and knowledge base of the facility and presents results in papers or presentations. 4. Operates the Oregon State TRIGA® Reactor (OSTR) in accordance with the license and regulatory requirements of the USNRC. 5. Develops and maintains reactor procedures in support of applications of the reactor allowed under the license of the facility. 6. Supports the academic mission of the reactor by facilitating and coordinating the involvement of various students and faculty academic and research needs. 7. Provides leadership for training coordination of new reactor operator (RO) candidates including development of training materials and programs related to changes associated with the facility and their applicability towards reactor operators.

Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field. Must obtain of a valid Senior Reactor Operator's (SRO) License within 12 months of hire. 2 years of experience with operation of a nuclear research reactor as an SRO. Demonstrated expertise in reactor theory, basic nuclear physics, neutronics, and thermal hydraulics. Must also have good knowledge of physical sciences including mathematics, and physics. Must pass USNRC background check.
