Positions in this job profile act as a system architect for university wide Network Services. They provide direction, consultation, design and implementation for systems across campus. Positions share a community of interest with academic faculty, and include academic research, public service, or instruction.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristics of the Specialist 2-Architect profile is the specialized expertise required to design, build, test and implement IT systems. The Specialist 2-Architect is distinguished from the Administrator 3-IT Architect by being an individual contributor requiring specialized education and experience. The Administrator 3-IT Architect profile is engaging in more administrative oversight including supervision of professional faculty, budget, and strategic development.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Assesses campus needs, evaluates new technologies, and designs systems to meet those needs by customizing and integrating public domain software as well as commercially written software packages. 2. Designs systems to work together and integrate with other University large-scale systems. 3. Analyzes system performance by designing and developing monitoring tools, which track server resource utilization, analyze network traffic, organize and systematically parse log information. 4. Uses information collected by monitoring tools and industry research to develop formal growth plans, system redesigns, and cost benefit analysis of current systems and new acquisitions. 5. Initiates and leads large campus wide initiatives and projects. 6. Researches new technologies and consults with others in the industry to learn about emerging technology, systems, and programs.

Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field. 4 years of experience providing management in the area of computing systems infrastructure or web application management.
