Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristics of the Specialist 2-Network Admin profile is the administration, including the research, planning, design, implementation and maintenance network computing for a division, college or department. Positions provide specialized expertise to network systems that promote and support research, learning technology and student centered services.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Administers, anticipates, plans, designs, constructs, and maintains the division, or college networks to integrate and enhance departmental labs, servers, and sub-networks. 2. Manages and ensures support for general access, student-computing laboratories for multiple departments or schools within the division or college. 3. Researches, recommends, designs and implements new products, policies and procedures for networked environments and systems to ensure performance and security of network systems. 4. Collaborates with researchers to plan and design network strategies that support the research and learning environment. 5. Oversees and provides troubleshooting and support for users.

Problems are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring; require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed. Decisions have significant and broad implications for the management and operations of a division/entire organization; the job contributes to decisions on the overall strategy and direction of the entire organization. Results are defined by senior leadership, division and college mission, vision and strategies. Incumbent sets own goals and determines how to accomplish results with few or no guidelines to follow, although precedents may exist; supervisor/manager provides broad guidance and overall direction.

Collaborates and interacts within the Dept/Unit and University wide to: • Resolve conflict, negotiate, or collaborate on major projects. • Access and/or work with sensitive and/or confidential information. • Handle sensitive issues and facilitate collaboration at the highest level. • Persuade, gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas, or collaborate on significant projects. • Develop and maintain relationships with key contacts to enhance workflow and work quality. • Exchange routine, factual information and/or answer routine questions. • Identify needs/concerns of others, determine potential solutions, resolve or redirect appropriately. • Exchange detailed information or resolve varied problems.
Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in field related to research or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or field related to assigned responsibilities. Professional certification pertaining to position may be required.
