Positions in this job profile manage the day-to-day operations of external relations for a program, department, college, or school. They provide ideas and subject matter expertise while ensuring effective, efficient workflow and adherence to policy and standards. They may contribute to the development of the budget and are accountable for managing the budget and activities of staff.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristics of the Manager 1-Ext Relations profile is the responsibility to manage the day to day operations of external relations for a department, school or college. Positions plan, develop and engage in programs, events and activities that engage, external stakeholders including alumni and industry partnerships to promote and gain support for programs and services.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Manages, develops, implements, and participates in programming and events to create collaborative relationships between the institution, department, college or unit and external stakeholders, including but not limited to community, alumni, and industry partners. 2. Manages the program or functional unit budget by managing within the budget and providing reports to inform of fiscal needs and results. 3. Manages the development of processes for effective and efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards. 4. Supervision including plan, assign and approve work; rewards/discipline; respond to grievances; hire/fire (or effectively recommend); prepare and sign performance evaluations/reviews of employees including classified and/or professional faculty. 5. Develops program evaluation systems for outcome measurements and benchmarks; modifies and develops programs to improve services, support, and programming for external stakeholder needs. 6. Creates and implements processes and communications to share and provide information exchange among external stakeholders and the university, department, college, or unit.

Accountability
Results are defined by senior leadership, division/college and university mission, vision and strategies; existing practices are used as guidelines to determine specific work methods. Carries out work activities independently; supervisor/manager is available to resolve problems. Supervises work of classified or unclassified employees, including planning, assigning, scheduling and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards. Is responsible for hiring, terminating, training and developing, responding to grievances, reviewing performance and administering corrective action for staff. Monitors, informs, reports, reconciles, and/or moves funds within budgets. Assists with the drafting and development of department budget.

Collaborates and interacts within the Dept/Unit, University Wide, and Externally to: • Exchange routine, factual information and/or answer routine questions. • Exchange detailed information or resolve varied problems. • Persuade, gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas, or collaborate on significant projects. • Resolve conflict, negotiate, or collaborate on major projects. • Develop and maintain relationships with key contacts to enhance workflow and work quality. • Identify needs/concerns of others, determine potential solutions, resolve or redirect appropriately. Collaborates and interacts within Dept/Unit to: • Access and/or work with sensitive and/or confidential information. • Handle sensitive issues and facilitate collaboration at the highest level.
Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in related field to work assigned. Experience developing and engaging in strategic partnerships with external stakeholders
