Positions in this job profile serve the mission of the University by designing, implementing, and collaborating on research, academic and/or startup company programs that establish and promote positive, productive relationships between the University's alumni, professional, industry, legislative, and student constituencies. They assure relationships for the University and outreach services are designed strategically, developed, nurtured, maintained, providing alignment of current and future academic, research and economic development goals for the University. Positions in this profile require a terminal degree in the area of expertise required of the position.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Specialist 1-Ext Relations profile is terminal degree required to develop, implement, and interact with external stakeholders for the program, college, or department. Positions implement the division or college strategic plan through external relationships and outreach activities to engage, promote, and gain support for programs and services with external stakeholders such as alumni and industry partnerships.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Creates, implements, and engages in external relationships, programs, collaborations, and events the support the strategic initiatives of the division, college, or department, including but not limited to industry partnerships, community partnerships, and alumni relationships. 2. Develops communications initiatives and messaging to facilitate, increase, and advance the mission with stakeholders within a broad geographic scope. 3. Represents the division, college, and profession at events, workshops, seminars, and other external as needed. 4. May supervise classified and professional faculty positions including plan, assign and approve work; rewards/discipline; respond to grievances; hire/fire (or effectively recommend); prepare and sign performance evaluations/reviews. 5. Provides counsel to and project management leadership on behalf of executive leadership on complex and sensitive internal and external initiatives, including policy, budget, or stakeholder relationship implications. 6. May track, frame, and assist in the engagement of the division, college, or department with state and federal governmental agencies in collaboration and cooperation with the University government relations team.

Typical Requirements
Terminal degree in field related to work assigned. Experience developing and engaging in strategic partnerships with external stakeholders.
