Profile Summary
Positions in this job profile maintain, enhance and oversee a university collection. They determine acquisition, attribution and authentication of collection or exhibit and engage in educational outreach programs as it pertains to the collection.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Specialist 1-Curator profile is the specialized expertise required to manage an art collection for a college or department. Positions require a terminal degree to maintain, enhance and oversee the collection.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Manages a collection of art, including maintaining and documenting inventory of all individual pieces in the collection, condition reports of pieces, certified appraisals, and assures appropriate security and insurance. 2. Identifies need for contracts with artists, galleries, vendors, and others; prepares contract language, oversees contract approval process, and ensures that contracts are completed and fulfilled. 3. Develops and implements policies and procedures for the appraisal, storage, preservation, and access of the collection. 4. Oversees the accessioning of individual pieces of the collection transferred, donated, or otherwise acquired, including the coordination and facilitation of the physical transfer, re-housing, and storage of historical materials following standards for conservation and preservation of archival materials. 5. Coordinates marketing and outreach events, activities and materials to promote the collection in multiple media formats, including development of displays, exhibits, publications such as brochures, posters and flyers. 6. Provides subject matter expertise to internal and external stakeholders, including providing information, education, resources and instruction.

Typical Requirements
Terminal degree in field related to assigned responsibilities. Experience in a special collection or archival unit.
