Positions in this job profile manage the day-to-day operations for sea-going scientific equipment, including all the electronic communications and sampling gear used by scientists on OSU's research vessels. This position communicates and collaborates as a national role and interacts with federal agencies. They provide ideas and subject matter expertise while ensuring effective, efficient workflow and adherence to policy and standards. They may contribute to the development of the budget and are accountable for managing the budget and activities of staff.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Manager 1-Marine Tech profile is the management of the day to day operations for sea-going scientific equipment. Positions manage within a budget and provide supervision for employees carrying out the daily work.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Ensures that research vessel's scientific systems are able to provide essential support for scheduled science operations including: electronics, computer-based data acquisition systems, and "overboard" sampling and science vehicles. 2. May participate in sea-going scientific operations. 3. Provides subject matter expertise, including providing information, education, and serving as principal investigator on proposals. 4. Provides specifications for purchase of new equipment and designs instruments and data systems for marine use, including oversight of the acquisition and maintenance of scientific equipment for use aboard ship, and instructing scientists in its use. 5. Supervision of professional faculty and/or classified positions including plan, assign and approve work; rewards/discipline; respond to grievances; hire/fire (or effectively recommend); prepare and sign performance evaluations/reviews. 6. Ensures compliance with University policies, state and federal laws and regulations, contractual agreements and industry standards.

Results are defined by senior leadership, college and university mission, vision and strategies. Incumbent sets own goals and determines how to accomplish results with few or no guidelines to follow, although precedents may exist; supervisor/manager provides broad guidance and overall direction. Supervises work of other supervisors/managers, including planning, assigning, scheduling and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards. Is responsible for hiring, terminating, training and developing, responding to grievances, reviewing performance and administering corrective action for staff, or effectively recommends. Plans organizational structure and job content. Assists with development of department/unit budget.

Typical Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Oceanography, Engineering, or related scientific or technical field. Experience in scientific operations at sea, including over-the-side operations. Experience in developing and writing proposals, manuals, policies, or scientific documentation. Experience in the coordination of technical work and technician activities. Knowledge of and experience with commonly used oceanographic instrumentation and shipboard equipment required. May require licensure and certification.
