Profile Summary
Positions in this job profile operate and maintain a small boat in support of research activities with overall responsibility for the safety and operation of the boat and sea going scientists. Positions are responsible for all aspects of operations and boat maintenance year round under potentially hazardous conditions including navigation. Positions provide the means for scientist and academic researchers to obtain a variety of samples and conduct experiments for their studies; provides training and instructions to researchers and students as to how to conduct research on the vessel, sampling techniques and safety procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Manager 1-Small Boat Cptn profile is the responsibilities to operate and maintain a small boat in support of research activities for the university. Positions provide supervision of vessel crew and ensure compliance of safety standards and operations of the vessel. The Manager 1-Small Boat Cptn profile is distinguished from the Manager 1-Research Vessel Cptn with smaller scope and impact of decisions. Positions operate a smaller boat and crew with a shorter duration of cruises.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Stands watch at sea including navigation using electronic equipment and other means, maneuvers the vessel as necessary to conduct oceanographic work, maintains ship’s logs, uses navigation charts and equipment, conducts shipboard and ship-to-shore communications, directs ship’s crew on watch and carries out the ship's routine. 2. Operates a variety of equipment including radios, radars, electronic navigation equipment, fathometers, ship control equipment and research equipment as necessary. 3. Confers with the chief scientist, party chiefs and marine technicians concerning the planned or ongoing scientific work to assure that the work is accomplished to the best of the ship and crew's ability. 4. Conducts ship's business including customs, immigration, agricultural, health, sanitation, and interacts with ship's agents as necessary. 5. Supervision of professional faculty and/or classified positions including plan, assign and approve work; rewards/discipline; respond to grievances; hire/fire (or effectively recommend); prepare and sign performance evaluations/reviews. 6. Ensures compliance with University policies, state and federal laws and regulations, contractual agreements, industry and safety standards.

Supervises work of other supervisors/managers, including planning, assigning, scheduling and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards. Is responsible for hiring, terminating, training and developing, responding to grievances, reviewing performance and administering corrective action for staff, or effectively recommending. Assists in planning for organizational structure and job content. Researches and makes recommendations on budget expenditures.

Typical Requirements
Possess a valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with a license, issued by the USCG, of no less than the following: 100 Ton Master. 2 years of underway deck officer experience. First Aid/ CPR/02 training and certification.
