Positions in this job profile are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel's machinery, as well as the mechanical and electrical systems under the overall direction of the Master. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations and policy.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Specialist 2-Chief Engineer profile is the specialized expertise required to manage the operations of the vessel’s machinery, mechanical and electrical systems for a vessel at sea and as daily engineer in ports.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Stands watch as the roving engineer at sea and daily duty engineer in ports. 2. Organizes, directs and supervises the Engine Department to provide safe, efficient and economical operation of ship's machinery, mechanical, and electrical systems. 3. Ensures compliance with university policy, state and federal laws and regulations, safety and industry standards. 4. Maintains an adequate supply of repair parts and maintenance materials onboard. 5. Manages and maintains required records and daily reports, including equipment tracking, expenditures and daily work logs in databases and other programs. 6. Creates reports and documents to inform or advise senior leadership’s decisions.

Problems are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring; require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed. Decisions have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department; the job may contribute to important strategy, operations, and business decisions that affect the vessel. Results are defined by senior leadership, college and university mission, vision and strategies. Incumbent sets own goals and determines how to accomplish results with few or no guidelines to follow, although precedents may exist; supervisor/manager provides broad guidance and overall direction. Positions may have supervisory responsibilities. Researches and makes recommendations on budget expenditures.

Typical Requirements
Possess valid Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) with the following rating: 1st Assistant Engineer Unlimited HP License or Chief Engineer Limited Oceans issued by the United State (US) Coast Guard. Current Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) certificate including current Basic Safety Training and Lifeboatman certificates.
