Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Specialist 2-Design Specialist profile is the technical expertise required to design, construct, and operate scientific equipment for a research vessel.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Provides technical guidance in the areas of research vessel design, construction, operation and scientific equipment outfitting and operation. 2. Develops specific vessel requirements, evaluates proposed design elements, and communicates requirements and design essentials with internal and external stakeholders. 3. Interacts with the various committees and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of the vessel. 4. Assists in preparation of technical reports, progress reports and other documents. 5. Identifies need for new navigation, communications, engineering, science support, and safety equipment upgrades on Ship Operations vessels. 6. Ensures compliance with University policy, state and federal laws and regulations, contract specifications and industry standards.

Typical Requirements
Bachelor of Science (BS) in a technical field applicable to managing the design, construction and operation of research vessels. Technical knowledge of ships and related equipment, maintenance operations, overhaul and design. Experience with research vessel operating requirements and conditions. Familiarity with applicable international and US regulations pertaining to the operation and maintenance of seagoing research vessels. Demonstrated experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or construction management.
