Distinguishing Characteristics
The distinguishing characteristic of the Specialist 2-Marine Data Syst profile is the technical expertise required to research, develop, implement and evaluate new and present technologies and network systems for maritime operations.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Researches, develops, evaluates and implements new technologies for use on research vessels, including data visualization techniques. 2. Collaborates with scientists regarding effective performance of scientific research systems including working with mooring and cabled observatory scientists to evaluate the data acquisitions and delivery mechanisms. 3. Develops and implements formats to structure data collected, methodology to archive data and establish/implement data quality standards to monitor, and ensuring integrity of data for research scientists. 4. Monitor equipment performance and data collection, in collaboration with scientists, and maintain and repair equipment as needed. 5. Manages shipboard network, including design, installation, maintenance, security and compatibility with various sources of on-shore networks. 6. Represent OSU on national oceanographic research committees/initiatives in areas of communications and marine research requirements/initiatives.

Typical Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in a Physical, Engineering, or Computer Science field. Experience in real-time applications, graphic applications, data acquisition applications, network design, and installation and administration, including wired and wireless.
