Profile Summary
Positions in this profile perform real-time speech to text services in the classroom and out of class activities that are open to students and/or the public. They provide verbatim transcripts of media to be used in creating open captions for media shown when individuals with a hearing loss are present. Positions require specialized training.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Transcriber 1 profile is distinguished from the Transcriber 2 by less years of transcriber experience. Positions in the Transcriber 1 profile require specialized training and experience, including up to 10 years of post-secondary transcriber experience.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Provides transcribing and captioning services, including typing material from spoken lectures, discussions, and meetings using specialized software to assist in the rapid and accurate translation of spoken information into electronic and print materials. 2. Use TypeWell software to provide a verbatim transcript for use in open captioning of media. 3. Provides subject matter expertise to internal and external stakeholders to enhance and promote department services and programs. 4. Ensures compliance with applicable university policy, state and federal regulations. 5. May provide leadwork and mentoring to other Transcribers.

Typical Requirements
Successful completion of the TypeWell Real-Time Transcribing Course with a passing score. If no transcribing services have been provided during the last 2 years, successful completion of the TypeWell refresher course.
