Retirement Checklists (recommended)

While not required, we encourage you to review these helpful retirement planning checklists.

Retirement Eligibility

Disability Retirement

If you become totally disabled due to an injury or illness and are no longer able to work, you may be eligible to receive a disability retirement pension.

Accrued Leave at Retirement

If you have any questions concerning your unused leave payout when retiring from OSU, please contact the HR Support Services team at [email protected].

Classified Employees

  • Sick Leave
    • Unused balance is not paid out.
    • For PERS Tier 1 & Tier 2 members, the balance is reported to PERS at retirement/termination.
  • Vacation
    • Unused balance is paid out up to the accrual limit of 250 hours.
  • Compensatory Time (Comp Time)
    • Balance is paid out.
  • Exchange Time
    • Balance is not paid out.
  • Personal Leave
    • Unused balance is not paid out.
    • IMPORTANT: Personal Leave is awarded in July each year. If you retire/terminate employment prior to working 1,040 hours in the fiscal year (July - June), the value of any used Personal Leave may be recovered when you retire/terminate employment.

Unclassified Employees

  • Sick Leave
    • Unused balance is not paid out.
    • For PERS Tier 1 & Tier 2 members, the balance is reported to PERS at retirement/termination.

  • Compensatory Time (Comp Time)
    • Unused balance is paid out.

Creditable Service for Academic Employees (Tier 1 & Tier 2)

If you are an academic employee who works a school year of less than 12 months, there are differences in how your service credit is calculated. Refer to PERS Creditable Service for Academic Employees (Tier 1/ Tier 2) for additional information.

PERS Tier 1 & Tier 2 Members - hired and/or became PERS member prior to August 23, 2003

PERS OPSRP (Tier 3) Members - hired and/or became PERS member on or after August 23, 2003

PERS Retirement Application Assistance Session (RAAS)

While not required, we encourage you attend a PERS Retirement Application Assistance Session (RAAS). A RAAS is a 45-minute, one-on-one appointment with a PERS representative to review your PERS Retirement Application forms. You can attend a RAAS within 90 days of your expected retirement date.

Voluntary Retirement Savings Programs

You will work directly with your Voluntary Retirement Savings Program plan vendor (provider) to rollover or take distributions from your retirement account(s).

Tax Deferred Investment (TDI) 403(b) Plan
